Fun with Fractions

We've been learning tons about fractions!  We've learned that fractions can name parts of a group, as well as parts of a whole.  We've drawn pictures, used fraction circles, played Pizza Fractions, used Kidspiration (computer program), etc.  Fractions really are fun!
Students built their own "sundaes" with their favorite kinds of ice cream.  They wrote their recipe in fractions on the bowl!

Who doesn't love a snack?  Students were given a scoop of Chex Mix and then had to tell what fraction was pretzels, cereal, etc.

Pottery with a Special Guest

Mr. Hansen, Landen's grandpa, has come into our classroom three times over the last couple of weeks to teach us about his art, pottery.
He helped us make pinch pots and hearts out of stonewear clay.  Then he brought our pieces home to fire in his kiln.  Then he brought them back to school so we could glaze them.  Then he brought them BACK home again to refire the glazewear!

Finally, he brought them back for us to keep last week.  I can't thank him enough for his time, his knowledge, his donation of supplies, and his gentle instruction.  What a wonderful teacher and grandpa!

Wow!  Look at these smart cookies!  All of these kids came back with signed calendars as proof of their hard work.  Thank you, parents for reading with your kids and practicing math facts - you are making a difference!!!  Enjoy the Book It slips!

Fables

With last week's cold days, I decided to not start a new story.  Instead, we read fables.  We learned that fables are stories that were typically spoken, not read. They always taught a lesson and had a moral.

We also watched this old cartoon (from 1934!).  I remember it from my childhood.  Do you?
